SUSTAINABILITY EDUCATION SUMMIT: REDUCING EMISSIONS & STIMULATING ECONOMIC GROWTH.

ABOUT THIS SUMMIT

On behalf of the Executive Governor of Ogun State, His Excellency Prince Dr Dapo Abiodun; the Honourable Commissioner of the Ministry of Environment, Engr. Ola Oresanya; the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Dr. (Mrs.) Lawal K.M.; the Management Team; the entire staff of the Ministry of Environment; and our Sustainability Consultant, Innovative Educational Services Limited (IES), we welcome you to the 2026 Ogun State Sustainability Education Summit, themed Reducing Emissions and Promoting Economic Growth.

According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and the National Adaptation Strategy and Plan of Action on Climate Change for Nigeria (NASPA-CCN) 2011 emissions report, Nigeria is vulnerable to climate change, and, by extension, so is Ogun State.

Against this background, the Ogun State Ministry of the Environment, in partnership with Innovative Educational Services (IES), explores education and awareness as tools to present options for reducing carbon and emissions footprints and maximising economic growth for company and business leaders in Ogun State. Key highlights include an industry-expert breakdown of the Nigerian Carbon Market Framework and insights from the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC). The summit will also feature extensive discussions on the energy transition, facilitated by on-site exhibitors showcasing their modular renewable energy blueprints. Sector pioneers will also share experiential knowledge on carbon market credit trading. The goal of this summit is to create an enabling environment to help the Federal Republic of Nigeria reach its national net-zero target by 2060.

To achieve the summit’s objective, we have curated the following activities and more, as highlighted below:

• Knowledge and information sharing on the Nigerian Carbon Market Framework.
• Drive investment in renewable energy and energy efficiency across all sectors of the Nigerian economy.
• Integrate climate-smart technologies across all sectors of the Nigerian economy.
• Promote the circular economy, improve waste collection, and advance the bioeconomy.
• Promote businesses in renewable energy, reforestation, sustainable agriculture, waste management, the circular economy, and clean technology.
• Exhibitions on emissions-reduction technologies, e.g., electric vehicles (EVs), solar panels, etc.

CLIMATE-SMART EDUCATION WORKSHOP

ABOUT THIS WORKSHOP

We are pleased to present the Ogun State Sustainability Education Program (OGSEP) 2026 on behalf of the Ogun State Executive Governor, the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MOEST), the good people of Ogun State, and our Sustainability Education Consultant, Innovative Educational Services Limited (IES).

The Ogun State Sustainability Education Program (OGSEP) is strategically positioned to foster environmental sustainability and promote learner competencies for a green transition. The planned workshop focuses on the role of education as a powerful driver for sustainable development.

The 2026 OGSEP workshop, themed Climate-Smart Education System in Ogun State, aims to strengthen the institutional capacity of Ogun State’s Ministry of Education in climate change education by empowering over 100 education specialists, including curriculum specialists, pedagogical and instructional experts, heads of schools, heads of departments, principals, policymakers, directors, and teacher representatives, to integrate climate change into their curricula, pedagogy, and teacher training, and to develop evidence-based planning and State policy development for climate change education.

Together with the Global Partnership for Education (GPE), UNICEF, Education International (EI), the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), the Office for Climate Education (OCE), Greening Education Partnership (GEP) and many others, we are providing training support for 100 educational experts through a 2-day interdisciplinary workshop focused on integrating climate change education into primary and secondary school curricula and on developing a climate-smart, resilient education system for Ogun State – the first of its kind in Ogun State.

Our objectives for this workshop are below:

• To strengthen the capacity of 100 education specialists to mainstream climate change education in the Ogun state Basic Education System, using education to raise awareness and inspire action on environmental challenges.
• To promote and prioritize quality climate change education for all as a climate crisis adaptation and mitigation strategy.
• To implement innovative teaching methods that will promote student and teacher involvement in climate action.
• To equip curriculum specialists, teacher educators, and other major education stakeholders with the skills to integrate climate topics across all subjects and grade levels.
• To use a systematic action-oriented approach to support participants in developing skills to design and implement climate change education within school programs.
• To enhance understanding of climate change and sustainability, while encouraging the adoption of environmentally conscious practices within educational institutions in Ogun State.

Expected outcomes:

• Develop teaching and learning materials to support the integration of climate change education into the school curriculum.
• Integrating climate change education into key teaching frameworks, standards, and curricula.
• Using the EU GreenComp framework, the Handbook for Schools in Nigeria on Climate Education, and UNESCO Greening Curriculum Guidance, we position climate change education as a cross-cutting model for integrating and implementing green education towards achieving the SDGs.

TASUED Staff Professional Development Workshop on ESD Competences     

Education is a powerful catalyst for change towards sustainability and a driver of all 17 UN global goals for sustainable development (SDGs). Education plays a crucial role in supporting citizens in developing the competencies needed to live responsibly and, at the same time, transform their society. Hence, it is critical to ensure that teachers and educators build the necessary capacity for the essential knowledge, understanding, skills, values, and dispositions to pass on sustainability competencies to the general populace, even as they are deemed catalysts in this chain reaction.

The Ogun State Sustainability Education Program (OGSEP) leverages the acquired competencies of teachers to meet the SDG target 4.7, which states that “By 2030, all learners acquire the knowledge and skills needed to promote sustainable development…” As the Nation’s Premier University of Education, the Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) kicks off the Ogun State Sustainability Education Program (OGSEP), focusing on professionalizing teacher/staff competencies on learning for sustainability.

The immediate objective of the Ogun State Sustainability Education Program (OGSEP) is first to explore the crucial role of education for sustainable development (ESD) within teacher education by introducing a professional development workshop, “ESD competencies for societal transformation” to all teaching staff of TASUED.

The mission of the OGSEP is statewide. That is, it is a state program responsible for developing the sustainability competencies of every citizen and resident of Ogun State. It covers formal and non-formal forms of learning. In addition, it extends to the workplace, including government offices, staff, and agencies facilitated by the network of teachers and educators.

This staff professional development workshop equips the TASUED educators with relevant knowledge, awareness, and action competencies to become change agents that will transform our societies for the betterment of all people, including their students and the planet.

WHAT IS ESD
• Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) as established in SDG 4.7 is an enabler for all the 17 global goals of the 2030 agenda for sustainable development.
• ESD is supposed to provide people,
including students, with the understanding, awareness, and ability that empowers them to transform themselves and transform societies.
• A comprehensive educational transformation is required in order to prepare professionals to handle
sustainability challenges and enable them to embed ESD in their teaching practices effectively (Imara and Altinay, 2021).
• Education has a role to play in achieving sustainable development goals in Lagos State.
